Horsehead is out!

I had the pleasure of watching Romain Basset’s truly unique euro horror film Horsehead some months ago and since then I’ve been waiting for it to be released on some kind of home video media. Finally our friends at Last Exit Entertainment have released it and it’s available to buy from their web shop (which might be the easiest and cheapest way to buy it at the moment). It’s a French production, but shot in English (don’t worry, it’s perfectly fine) with a awesome cast: Lilly-Fleur Pointeaux, Catriona MacColl, Murray Head, Vernon Dobtcheff and Philippe Nahon!

I might review it sooner or later, but it’s a hard movie to describe in words even if it’s fairly normal and not really experimental or abstract, this is a full on horror/mystery based on lucid dreaming - which is dreams where you’re aware that you’re dreaming. A very intriguing subject and it’s a concept giving birth to endless of ideas what to do with it. Horsehead is a subtle movie, but still on oozes with tension, awesome locations, fine acting and - for once - interesting ideas. It’s a horror movie far from the usual clichés.

On Letterboxd I have it full score and wrote this “Horsehead is an amazingly dark, surreal and twisted take on lucid dreaming. Fulci, Argento, arty farty and a deeply sexual fairy tale all in one.”. I think that’s a pretty fair description! But I will watch it again as soon my DVD arrives and then I will write a proper review.

There's one thing I dig a lot, and that's when nice people do something awesome. This is one of those things. The printed magazine is still alive and well today, make no mistake about it, but for us interested in genre movies, the macabre or what ever tickles your fancy we just have dinosaurs like Fangoria and some quite worthless UK magazines no one really care about.

But I care about Goregasmic, mostly because I want a magazine that's not too big for it's own good, that's still run by fans instead of journalists who just wants to have their byline as big as possible. Tom Savini’s Nightmare City!

Wut?!

That was my general feeling when waking up the other day with a text message from my pal Jocke informing me Tom Savini is directing a remake of my favorite movie, Nightmare City! Original director Umberto Lenzi is attached as a associate producer, so that’s a nice thing and makes me a bit calmer. So what will we expect from a reboot of this amazing Radioactive Mutated People-movie (NOT zombies!)? Here’s the information from their IndieGoGo page:

After the outbreak of an unknown virus in the Caribbean the Miami Port Authority receives an SOS from an international aid ship returning from Haiti. TV reporter Dean Miller and his cameraman Charlie are sent to the port where rescue teams are awaiting the arriving ship. At first the ship appears to be deserted, but suddenly the rescue teams are attacked by dozens of deformed people. Infected by a new hybrid of two of the most deadly viruses of our time - Ebola and leprosy; their faces and bodies are covered with welts and sores and they are hungry for blood.

Dean and his colleague witness a brutal massacre and return to the TV station to inform the public about the horrifying events, but the government and military prohibit the broadcasting of the news in order to avoid a panic. With the public in the dark, the virus and the number of infected people start to spread over the city, while Dean, his wife Anna and a small group are trying to escape from the 'City Of The Walking Dead'…

Sounds fun. Just like the original film! But am I the only one who wishes at least a cameo by Hugo Stiglitz?!

I was a bit skeptical at first. Not because the remake-thingie - I like remakes actually, the ultimate form of exploitation. It was more that it felt too good to be true. But then I kept returning to the fact that Savini did a helluva good job with the remake of Night of the Living Dead, one of the best reboots ever made. So hopefully the script is good and Savini is in the mood to create a new awesome version of a timeless classic! I decided to support them, and so can you! Support Eric Stanze's Stoplight!

Stanze is without a doubt the most talented indie filmmaker in the US (maybe the world) today. Ratline and Deadwood Parker are masterpieces, the latter one is one of my all time faves when it comes to American indpendent. Now you have chance to help him out with his new production, STOPLIGHT, starring another favorite, Jason Christ. 

A road-trip odyssey, a stark thriller, and a harrowing descent into madness...

Wicked Pixel and Stanze promises "it will be an unflinching, bold, thought-provoking, beautiful, and sometimes shocking cinematic experience.", and I don't doubt them. It usually what happens when these guys do films, and always with passion and talent. Not just violence for the sake of violence. 

There's a lot of interesting perks over at their IndieGoGo page, check it out, or just pre-order it at their site, it's also a way of helping this film getting made. I've already done my thing (twice actually, so I guess I will get two signed blu-rays in the mail - maybe I will give one away here at the blog?) and now it's time to do yours. 

Nails has arrived!

Last Exit Entertainment's first release NAILS has just arrived and it looks great. There's a lot of special features I haven't looked into yet - but I would say the coolest thing with it is the added CD with the awesome, highly original soundtrack! I mean, this is definitive edition of Nails - like Andrey Iskanov want you to see it! I know Andrey is a cat lover so of course I got Kitek to pose with it :)

Most of the film is actually shot, there's one episode (which they shoot in May, pity because I'm going to Tokyo in June! I wanted to visit the set!) left and then they also need money for post-production etc etc. The normal hazzles of independent filmmaking. 

As soon as my paycheck stumbles in like a drunk whore on Friday I will give them what I can give, because I want to see this movie as soon as possible. French genre-sensibility in Tokyo, that's just a dream come true.

Upcoming revenge flick: She Kills!

I've grown a bit tired of retro-grindhouse flicks, mostly because I prefer real movies and not fake ones. But lo and behold, here's She Kills - and I dig what I see. The title is good, it looks slick, it made me laught and doesn't seem too processed to look old and gritty (well, a little bit, but not enough to irritate sensitive me) and one of the characters is obviously a reference to Christina Lindberg, a woman I've met many times and I adore - here's an old photo, I'm a bit too fat here, but I think that's overshadowed by Christina's charisma:

Anyway, the trailer for She Kills also have an handsome asian dude in it, which I always welcome :) The movie is directed by Ron Bonk - a filmmaker I'm slightly familiar with (he was involved in The Undertow, which I like, and also is the man behind one of the episodes on the upcoming anthology movie Hi-8, executive produced by Brad Sykes, a man I like a lot!) - and I think I gotta see more of his works from now on!

Who doesn't want to support a movie called "Don't Fuck in the Woods"?!

I love supporting projects where friends are involved, and this time it's producer Jason Limberg who deserves the attention - okay, I know he's not the director or screenwriter or star - but he's a good pal and I always support persons with a great heart. 

This is what director Shawn Burkett says about the movie: "For the last year and a half I have been working on DFITW, and this film won't be a cheesy film by any means. But at the same time it will have mass amounts of gore, premarital sex, nudity, comedic plot points, impaling, camping, decapitations, and a bloody good time! And did I mention that this is a CREATURE FEATURE?!?!?"

I guess premarital sex means more boobs than manflesh, but I guess I have to live with it! Looking forward to the creatures, I'm always up for a monster movie! I choosed a perk where I'm gonna get a credit in the movie, so I hope they don't forget to add me to their IMDB page - and use the real me on IMDB! :)
